Historic Bluestone Cottage extended to provide a Summer Room with traditional floor and verandah to access the garden and Courtyard.
The existing house had good ‘winter retreat’ type living spaces that could be retained, and enhanced when linked with a 'summer room' addition that flowed from the Kitchen to create an new additional intimate courtyard with plus new informal living area Entry.
A traditional verandah was extended with ornate detailing added to unify the seamless addition of hipped roof extensions with plaster clad wall areas and traditional timber window and doors added to merge in harmony with the existing stone gabled cottage. The client was advised to add a Master Bedroom with Ensuite when renovating the Laundry to cater for a growing family which was located in the South East corner of the site. The Master Bedroom features glazed double doors and sidelights to enjoy maximum sunshine and private views over the lawn and garden and retain the best outdoor spaces. A new Ensuite was added in addition to the existing Bathroom upgraded as efficient future proofing and vision that has increased family liveability and site useability.
A fold down loft stair was added to existing Bedroom to give extra storage use to new and existing roof spaces as a cost effective solution overcoming the lack of storage. The Summer Room was created as a light airy transitional space with extensive double glazed areas using traditional joinery design in all walls and the pyramid shaped roof. The new additions have not only overcome the limitations of the small site but created
both exciting and multi functional spaces that flow with aesthetic appeal through the use of consistent quality materials and finishes that suit the properties aesthetic character. Porcelain cream marbled floor and wall tiles with floral dado are used in the Ensuite. The interiors incorporate warmth with matai timber flooring, rimu timber architraves, skirtings and trim, cedar joinery, spanish white interior walls and ceilings to allow richer
fabrics on the curtains and furnishings that suit the decore of a renovated historic home.
The merlin coloured exterior plastered walls were a cost efficient compliment to the original blue stone gabled walls. The verandah panelled soffits, with posts,struts, beams, plus exterior joinery were painted dutch white to maintain traditional contrasting colours that link to the spacious airy interiors. New copper spoutings were introduced to replace previous inferior materials, and neatly trim Rangoon painted and old and new roofing and roof glazing bars on the new extensions of Main Bedroom and Summer Room. The alterations and additions are in the owners own words “A delight that will see them spend a great many years enjoying their enhanced traditional character home”.
